Dedicated to the Memory of My Grandfather Ali (Dede)
The Light in Their Hearts is now available! I contributed by designing the tezhip designs and creating several illustrations. Having recently completed the minor pilgrimage (Umrah), the opportunity to work on this meaningful project has been a double blessing—both enriching and deeply fulfilling.

The Light in Their Hearts is available at Waterstones, Barnes & Noble, Books A Million, Foyles, Blackwell's Bookshops, Powell's Books, WHSmith,  Hugendubel, and many others.
MY LATE GRANDFATHER AND THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THIS BOOK
In the photograph below is my late grandfather and me. This photograph was taken around 2007. He was the one who took me to Umrah in 2024, and the experiences and impressions I encountered there became a major source of inspiration for the patterns and visual language of this book.
He was always a true admirer of Mecca and Medina. Nearly every conversation with him somehow led back to those sacred places. His presence and ideas also contributed intellectually to the making of this book. He constantly spoke about the geography of that region, its rituals, and the spiritual atmosphere surrounding it. In fact, many of the objects featured in the map illustrations throughout the book were inspired by his own recommendations.
My grandfather, Mehmet Ali Özalp, was born in Tavas, Denizli, Turkey, on March 1, 1941. He worked as the Technical Chief at TRT İzmir Radio and later retired from there. Outside of his professional life, he was deeply connected to nature and enjoyed spending his free time working in the fields and engaging with rural life.
He passed away at the age of 85, but his stories, memories, and love for those sacred lands continue to inspire me. Traces of his spirit can be found throughout the pages of this book.
